Anyone following me on Social Media may have noticed I’m slightly obsessed with city skylines and travel. Following my Aberdeen skyline, I decided to continue along this theme with a skyline of Edinburgh, illustrating the capital of Scotland.
It’s an incredibly compact city that surprises most who visit it for the first time. This is mainly due to its long history and an old-fashioned city plan, which means surviving buildings are very close together. I took the more compact and hilly landscape of Edinburgh as my subject and created a scene with a few prominent landmarks that represent the city. However, there's so much to this wonderful City I suspect there will be future Edinburgh skylines!
Edinburgh is a fascinating city, World Heritage Site and capital of Scotland. Lying on the banks of the Firth of Forth and crowned by Edinburgh Castle but with relatively low surrounding hills, it is packed with beautiful views, both natural and manmade. From the zig-zag hill-station of Arthur's Seat serving as a memorial to the great Scottish poet Robert Burns at one end to the boldness of Edinburgh's neo-classical architecture on our Parliament and National Museum of Scotland at the other.
My highlights of Edinburgh are the medieval Old Town and elegant Georgian New Town with gardens and neoclassical buildings. Looming over the city is Edinburgh Castle, home to Scotland’s crown jewels and the Stone of Destiny, used in the coronation of Scottish rulers. Arthur’s Seat is an imposing peak in Holyrood Park with sweeping views, and Calton Hill is topped with monuments and memorials. Let me show you my interpretation of beautiful Edinburgh:

Edinburgh Castle - the historic fortress which dominates the skyline of Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland, from its position on the Castle Rock.
The Scott Monument - Victorian Gothic monument to Scottish author Sir Walter Scott.
Princes Street Gardens - The Gardens are the best known parks in Edinburgh.
The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art -part of the National Galleries of Scotland.
Holyrood Palace - Commonly referred to as Holyrood Palace or Holyroodhouse, it is the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland, Queen Elizabeth II.
The University of Edinburgh - the sixth oldest university in the United Kingdom and one of Scotland's ancient universities.
Calton Hill Arthurs seat - Arthur's Seat is an extinct volcano which is the main peak of the group of hills in Edinburgh.
There's also a balloon which is a nod to James Tytler who made the first successful balloon ascent in Britain in his "Grand Edinburgh Fire Balloon" and the Greyfriars Bobby statue.
